Chesterfield County Fire Department
The Chesterfield County Fire Department began as a volunteer organization in 1928 (Ettrick Volunteer Fire Department). Tremendous growth necessitated the hiring of career firefighters. On October 1, 1969, the first seven paid firefighters began their assignment at company #4 in Bon Air. Today Chesterfield County's combination department has over 450 uniform members. All members are certified at the EMT level, with many certified to the Cardiac Technician or Paramedic level. Firefighters respond from 17 stations protecting 446 square miles, and a population of 264,000 citizens.
