The New York City Emergency Medical Service was established in 1970. The NYC
EMS was chartered by the New York City Health and Hospital Corporation (HHC) to
assume the functions of providing comprehensive pre-hospital care and
transportation to the sick and injured citizens of the five boroughs of NYC and
its surrounding suburbs. With time and advances in pre-hospital care NYC EMS
grew to meet the task of New York's population. NYC EMS serviced a population of
over 9 Million citizens. Over 3,500 dedicated men and woman, consisting of
Emergency Medical Technicians, Paramedics, Supervisory Personal along with
Support and Technical staff answered 911 calls for emergency assistance
everyday. This allowed over 450 NYC EMS ambulances to effectively patrol NYC
streets and answer approximately 3,000 calls for assistance daily. In total, NYC
EMS responded to over 1 Million 911 calls per year making NYC EMS the largest
911 Municipal system as well as the busiest in the nation if not the world. The
NYC EMS relationship did not stop at just 911 Municipal EMS services, it also
went on to provide NYC and its surrounding municipalities in times of need.
Medical support for visiting dignitaries and during enormous natural manmade
disasters. NYC EMS responded nationwide, as well as across the globe to lend
