Mack CF Pumper Hazmat 1
Hazardous Materials Company 1 Of the FDNY was organized on October 15, 1984 in a
fire station at 56-29 68th Street in the Maspeth section of the Borough Of
Queens. Haz-Mat 1 is the largest company unit in the FDNY and has an officer and
seven firefighters on duty on each tour. They cover the entire city on special
calls for their specialized services, since the inception, this has been a
two-piece unit. They share quarters with another special company, Squad Company
288, which has an officer and five firefighters assigned on each tour. When
first organized they were equipped with a specially built 1983 American La
France/Saulsbury first piece, and a retrofitted 1979 Mack Type CF 1,000 GPM
Pumper as the second piece, this Mack (FDNY registration #MP7928) was originally
assigned as the pumper of Engine Company 26 and was part of an order of
seventyfour 1979 Mack 1,000 GPM Pumpers and six 2,000 GPM Pumpers. As the
second piece of Haz-Mat-1, it was modified to carry specialized equipment, plus
neutralizing agents and absorbents. It remained in service until 1990 when it
was disposed of. Its place was taken for almost two years by the 1983 American
La France/Saulsbury, which in turn was replaced by a much larger, 1989 Mack/Saulsbury
hazardous materials truck.
