Ladder 42
Thomas Von Essen was sworn in as the 30th Fire Commissioner of New York City on April 22, 1996. Von Essen was assigned to Ladder 42 in the South Bronx after completing Proby School in the summer of 1970. After 13 years in the firehouse, he was elected Bronx trustee in the Uniformed Firefighters Association. In 1990, he returned to Ladder 42 and in 1993 returned to the UFA as its President. In 1996, in an unprecedented move, Mayor Giuliani asked Von Essen to become Fire Commissioner. He is the first firefighter in the history of FDNY to be appointed Commissioner. He has made improved firefighter safety and training the Department's primary goal.
