The District of Columbia Fire and EMS Department provides around the clock emergency medical care and transport in the Nation's Capital. The two types of ambulances the department staffs are Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS), which are sent to a particular medial emergency depending on the nature of the call. The BLS units are staffed by two emergency medical technicians, while paramedics staff the ALS units. All units carry basic life support equipment. In addition, the ALS units are also equipped with advanced equipment for intravenous therapy, endotracheal intubation, and defribrillation.
