The Space Gateway Support (SGS) Fire Department serves Cape Canaveral Air Station and the Kennedy Space Center. Geographic boundaries extend 34 miles north to south and 10 miles east and west, covering over 150,000 acres with over 20,000 employees and 10,000 visitors daily. The SGS Fire Department is contracted by NASA and the United States Air Force under the Joint Base Operations contract (JBOSC).

The Department is divided into two districts. District One encompasses the Cape Canaveral Air Station and has three Fire Stations. District One provides protection for all processing and launching of Expendable Launch Vehicles. District Two encompasses the Kennedy Space Center and also has three Fire Stations. District Two provides protection for the processing, launching and landing of the Space shuttle vehicle. Both Districts provide twenty four hour seven day a week coverage for Structural Response, Aircraft Response, Hazardous Materials Response, Technical Rescue Response, ALS medical Response, Fire Inspection, Fire Engineering and Launch/Landing suppression and Rescue Team coverage for all Shuttle and unmanned missions. SGS Fire Services also provides Mutual Aid to Brevard County and Port Canaveral.

Thirty eight pieces of Apparatus are used by the department these include: Structural Fire Fighting Engines, Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting vehicles, ALS Ambulances, Hazardous Materials response units, Armored Personnel Carriers and an amphibious tracked vehicle.

All fire services personnel are certified to the level required by each job function i.e. Paramedic, Hazardous Materials Technician or Flight Crew Rescue Team Member. Physical conditioning is prime importance, and accomplished with a physical fitness program Departmental Personnel also participate in activities on and off the Space Center Promoting fire Safety and demonstrating fire service capabilities and participating in events such as the Fire Fighter Combat Challenge.
