The Oak Lawn Fire Department, an ISO Class 1 department, was organized as a volunteer department in 1923 and converted to a full-time career organization in 1961. Today, the department protects approximately 56,200 people over an area of 8.6 miles within the Village of Oak Lawn, containing a mix of residential, commercial and light industrial occupancies. Additionally, the department provides first due automatic aid for two adjoining communities accounting for a total 'still alarm' coverage area of over 15 square miles and 94,000 population.
