The Plainfield Fire Department was established in 1923. It was first career department in Hendricks County, Indiana. The response area covers 40 square miles just west of and adjacent to the Indianapolis International Airport. The department maintains an average response time of 3.5 minutes and serves nearly 30,000 people. In 1999 the department responded to over 2,800 incidents. The Plainfield Fire Department consists of 52 firefighters and 6 administrative positions. Apparatus includes: 3 Engines, 2 Ladder Trucks, 3 Paramedic Ambulances, 3 Command Units, 1 Boat, 1 Support/ATV unit, miscellaneous staff vehicles and 1 new Tactical Rescue unit on order.
Engine 121 is a 1993 Pierce Dash with a 1250GPM pump and 1,000 gallon water tank. It has a six man cab with a top mounted pump panel and generator. This unit carries a full set of extrication tools and has both electric and air reels permanently mounted in the rear compartment. Engine 121 responds to over 1,100 runs a year.
The Plainfield Fire Department operates two fire stations and a headquarters and is planning the construction of a third fire station.
