Philadelphia Fire Department History

1696 - As early as 1696 records were found of fire prevention laws in Pennsylvania

1730 - In this year the most serious fire up to this time occurred. The damage was $25,000.

December 17, 1736 - The first organized fire company - Union Fire Company - organized by Benjamin Franklin. Some members included Franklin, Issac Paschall, Sam Powel, William Pawle and Sam Syme.

1808 - Leather riveted hose invented by two Philadelphia hose men.

1852 - There were in existence at this time 37 engine companies, 37 hose companies and 2 hook and ladder companies.

1860 - The departments consists of 3,000 men, organized into ninety companies. Equipment included 27 steam engines, 47 hand engines, 114 hose carriages, 76,338 feet of hose and 1,595 feet of ladders.

March 15, 1871 - Paid department started.

1910s - First motorized truck.

March 17, 1996 - 125th anniversary of paid department.
