The Baltimore City Fire Department was organized in 1859. It serves a City of 92
square miles with a population of 750,000 people.
The Baltimore City Fire Department has 1,643 uniformed members and 133
non-uniformed personnel. The Department is comprised of 40 engine companies and
22 truck companies. The Department has 18 paramedic units and 4 ambulances.
There are also two fire boats, 1-105' tug boat style and 1-30' Boston Whaler.
There are several specialized units, including 2 Air Cascades, 1 Haz Mat, 1
Heavy Rescue, 1 Field Command, and 1 SCUBA unit. Herman Williams, Jr. is Chief
of the Baltimore City Fire Department. He is aided by three Assistant Chiefs.
They oversee operations in Suppression, the Fire Prevention Bureau, The Fire
Investigation Bureau, the Fire Academy, the Fire Communications Bureau, the
Medical Bureau and the Water Safety Office.
