F.D.N.Y. Firefighting Operations
The mission of the Bureau of Operations is to effectively manage fire suppression, protect life and property and provide emergency medical services. The firefighting force consists of 10,997 uniformed personnel, who respond to 447,148 alarms. There are 2,819 EMS personnel, who respond to 1,034,506 medical calls in a year.
The Bureau oversees all equipment and apparatus used by the Department's 203 Engine companies, 143 Ladder Companies and 217 municipal ambulances and 70 voluntary hospital providers. It also supervises the Special Operations Command (SOC) and its specialized units: Hazardous Materials, Marine Division, five Rescue and seven Squad Companies and the related support units, such as Mask Service Unit, Recuperation and Care Units and the Decontamination Unit. To respond to acts of chemical/biological terrorism, New York City is designated one of the first Metropolitan Medical Strike Team cities. The FDNY has built the team around existing haz/mat assets with the five new Squad Companies (total of seven) that are trained in all aspects of this program, particularly the triage and decontamination of victims.
