Tragedy struck the Worcester Fire Department on December 3, 1999 shortly after Box 1438 was struck for a warehouse fire at 266 Franklin Street. A report of two homeless people trapped within the building had firefighters searching the interior of the building. As conditions deteriorated, two firefighters became lost and unable to locate the exit. Several firefighters began searching until the fire conditions deteriorated to the point where the incident commander ordered an evacuation and roll call of all companies.
A head count confirmed that four other firefighters were missing. Numerous attempts were made on each floor to locate the lost firefighters until conditions forced the the evacuation of all firefighters. Defensive operations were set up and the fire continued to burn for a few days leading to the collapse of the interior of the building. Worcester firefighters assisted by mutual aid and task force companies remained on scene for eight days searching for the missing firefighters.
